On Klosterstraße, in Berlin's oldest quarter, stand the ruins of the Franciscan friary church from the 13th century, before the war the city's foremost medieval building. The grey friars gave the district its name – the Grey Friary – and after the Reformation the last monks were allowed to remain until the final one died in 1571. But one of the brothers is said never to have left the walls. The friary legend tells of Father Roderich, a spiteful and cruel monk whose spirit walks the ruin as punishment: a limping figure in a grey habit moving among the broken brick vaults at night. In Berlin folklore the grey monks were also omens of disaster – when a grey friar appeared in the city, plague, fire or war was coming. The ruin's empty Gothic windows against the evening sky make it easy to see why the legend never died.
