The village of Heiligensee in Berlin's north-western corner takes its name from the lake beside the Havel, and legends cluster thickly around it. A castle is said to have stood here once, home to a princess; she was cursed and the castle sank into the lake. Church bells have lain on the lakebed since time immemorial, and on moonlit nights they are said to toll from the deep while a white woman rises from the water. In the Middle Ages the lake's water was venerated as holy and healing – every hundred years it was consecrated with a silver icon, and the cured left their crutches hanging in the village church. But the deep was greedy too: once a year two black bulls were harnessed to a cart, whereupon they turned wild, bolted from the village straight into the bottomless lake and were never seen again. A farmer who dug up an iron chain in his lakeside garden saw a great black swan surface – then chain and swan vanished into the depths.
