On the shore of lake Grunewaldsee stands Berlin's oldest surviving palace, built in 1542 for Elector Joachim II. Here lived Anna Sydow, 'the beautiful foundress', whom the Elector loved openly and showered with honours. On his deathbed Joachim made his son Johann Georg swear to spare her – the son broke his oath that same year and locked Anna away for life in Spandau fortress, where she died. Ever since, she has walked as die Weiße Frau, the death messenger of the Hohenzollerns. Eight days before Johann Georg's own death in 1598 she was seen for the first time, and night nurses woke to find the white figure bending over the cradles of princely children. When she wore black gloves, death was near. Around the hunting lodge where her happiness once lived, legend says she has never found rest.
