Where legend places the pagan temple of Triglav, St. Peter's towers fell again and again – and beneath the square archaeologists found thousands of forgotten graves.

Petriplatz on the Fischerinsel is Berlin's birthplace: here stood the church and churchyard of Cölln, Berlin's sister town. According to the founding legend, a pagan temple to the three-headed Wendish god Triglav stood on this spot before Albert the Bear had the land christianised and 'set a little bear in the marsh'. Yet the church raised upon the old cult site never seemed to find peace: tower after tower was destroyed down the centuries – by fires, by lightning, and in 1734 the tower collapsed so catastrophically that the master builder was placed under arrest. The last Petrikirche was demolished by the GDR in the 1960s, but when archaeologists opened up the square they found Berlin's oldest cemetery: thousands of skeletons of the city's first inhabitants, lying beneath the paving stones for centuries. Today the House of One rises over the square of the dead.
