Around the Gespensterwald, people have long told of drowned sailors whose spirits come up from the shore, and of figures appearing between the trunks when the sea fog rolls in. The name is well earned: at dusk the beeches themselves seem to move — salt, damp and constant Baltic wind have twisted them into pale, snake-like shapes.

The wood lies right on the cliff edge between Warnemünde and Kühlungsborn, 180 hectares of old coastal forest left undisturbed. It has become one of Mecklenburg's most visited eerie destinations, at its most affecting in November, when the fog comes in off the sea and the contorted crowns dissolve into grey.
