Rosstrappe
Sachsen-Anhalt · Deutschland · Natural site
Princess Brunhilde is said to have leapt the Bode gorge on horseback to escape the giant Bodo – the hoofprint is still visible in the granite.
The granite crag of the Rosstrappe rises sheer above the Bode gorge in the Harz, facing the Hexentanzplatz. Legend tells how the fair princess Brunhilde fled on horseback from the giant Bodo, who wanted to force her into marriage. At the precipice she dared the leap – her horse sprang across the deep gorge and landed on the crag, its hoof stamping the mark in the granite that gives the place its name. Bodo plunged into the depths, was transformed into a black hound, and has guarded Brunhilde's golden crown ever since it fell into the river's churning pool, the Bodekessel. The river Bode bears his name, and whoever dives for the crown is said never to surface again.
