Celle Castle

The White Lady of Celle Castle is said to be Duchess Eleonore d'Olbreuse, still keeping watch over her residence at night.

The white Welf residence palace of Celle is among Lower Saxony's oldest and most storied castles. For generations, people have told of a White Lady gliding through its halls and stairwells at night. The figure is said to be Eleonore d'Olbreuse, the French Huguenot duchess who became mistress of the house in the 17th century against the court's wishes and outlived both intrigues and her husband within its walls. Over the years, guards and staff have reportedly seen a woman in pale dress appearing in the Baroque rooms and vanishing through closed doors. The castle was also where the unhappy Queen Caroline Mathilde of Denmark lived in exile until her death in 1775 – another woman said to linger still.
