In the Oflag IV-C prison camp a macabre tradition was born: officers who faked a successful escape instead hid in cavities beneath the chapel pulpit, for months at a time, and were called 'ghosts' by their comrades — spectres who only emerged in the dark to eat. Today visitors report unexplained footsteps, voices and cold draughts in the long cell corridors, and Colditz draws ghost hunters from across Europe.

The Renaissance castle near Leipzig became, during the Second World War, the camp where the Allied officers who had escaped most often were sent. Before that the house had served as a psychiatric hospital and a Nazi institution where hundreds of patients died — history and legend have wound together into one of Saxony's eeriest places.
