Sachsenburg Castle

The White Lady of Sachsenburg is linked to Magdalene von Schönberg's whitewashed tombstone – and to old tensions between lords and subjects.
Above the river Zschopau in central Saxony stands Schloss Sachsenburg, a Renaissance castle with one of the region's best-documented ghost legends. A White Lady is said to walk its halls at night, a figure that folk belief eventually identified with the noblewoman Magdalene von Schönberg. The connection arose in an eerily concrete way: when her tombstone in the church was whitewashed in the late 19th century, the legend of the White Lady and the memory of the real woman merged into a single figure. The tale reflects the old tensions between the castle's masters and their subjects, and is recorded in Grässe's great collection of legends of the Kingdom of Saxony.
