Hammershus, Bornholm

Bornholm · Dänemark · Castle

The watchman sat on the wall to learn who built by night. By morning the wall had grown three ells around him.

Northern Europe's largest castle ruin stands on a crag 74 metres above the Baltic at the northern tip of Bornholm. It was the archbishops' stronghold, and then the king's, and its whole history is a quarrel over who should own the island. Legend says it was not people who built it. The underground folk are said to have raised the walls, and they grew so fast each night that local people became uneasy and wanted to find out how. A watchman sat down on the wall itself to see, but fell asleep. When morning came the wall had grown three ells over and around him, and he was buried alive inside his own stonework. The mantle tower and the cracked curtain walls still stand in the wind, and grass grows where the courtyard was.
