She appeared to the priest the night before his journey and struck the table leg — and in the hidden compartment lay the deed that saved the school.

Herlufsholm stands by the Suså on the foundations of the old Skovkloster and was founded in 1565 by Herluf Trolle and Birgitte Gøye. Two legends have followed the place. One concerns Birgitte Gøye herself: the night before the school's priest was to travel to Copenhagen to prove the school's right to the estate, she appeared to him, went to a large table and struck one of its legs repeatedly before vanishing. Next morning the priest examined the table, found a secret compartment, and in it the deed of gift that secured the school's future. The other legend is darker: Palle Axelsen Rosenkrantz, who served as schoolmaster here, was in later times accused of having walled his own daughter into the so-called maiden cellar. Cloister walls, church and colonnades still stand by the water.
