Seven hundred cremation graves set in stone ships above the Limfjord — and beneath them, the tracks of a farmer fleeing the sand.

On the slope above the Limfjord lies one of Scandinavia's largest Iron Age and Viking burial grounds. It was in use for six hundred years, from around AD 400 to just before 1000, and holds 41 inhumation graves and some 700 cremation graves. The dead were burned on the spot, and each grave was framed with standing stones: ship-shaped and triangular for men, oval or round for women. The field looks like a fleet of stone ships sailing towards the water. Around 1100 the sand drift grew so violent that the site was abandoned and buried outright. When archaeologists uncovered it in the 1950s they found, beneath the sand, clear traces of a farmer and his horse fleeing the elements. The ground had closed over the living and the dead alike.
