The tailor Didrik vomited up a living animal that moved in his belly — and named the woman in this house as the one who had bewitched him.

Maren Thomasdatter, married to the wealthy tailor and innkeeper Laurids Sørensen Splid, lived in the house at Sønderportsgade 3 in Ribe. In 1636 her husband's trade rival, the tailor Didrik, was struck by nightmares, muteness and convulsions — and the following year he is said to have vomited up a living animal that moved in his belly. The neighbours were convinced he had been bewitched, and Didrik named Maren as the one who had cursed him. The trial dragged on for four years and was pushed through court after court; Christian IV himself forced the case to be reopened in 1639. She was tortured on the rack, finally confessed, and on 10 November 1641 was burned at the stake between the gallows hills outside the town. The house still stands in Ribe's medieval street grid with a memorial plaque on its facade.
