The 128-metre chalk cliff at the eastern tip of Møn is the most legend-haunted place in Denmark. Here rules Klintekongen, the Cliff King, whom the islanders also call Jøing Upsal — a cover name that scholars read as Odin himself. He lives inside the cliff, and when the island is threatened by enemies he is said to ride out and beat them back. The legends tell that Møn was once divided into seven kingdoms and that the Cliff King was the mightiest of their lords; Grønjætte, the giant in his service, ruled another part of the island and is pictured with spear and clenched fist turned against the mainland. Fishermen along this coast long held the cliff too dangerous to boast about. Below lie fallen chalk blocks in the water, white against black, and the collapses come without warning.
