"Hush, my child, tomorrow your father Finn comes" — the troll was to have Esbern Snare's eyes and heart unless he guessed the name.
The five-towered church of Kalundborg is unique in Scandinavia, and the legend of how it was built is among the country's oldest. Esbern Snare had promised to raise the church but lacked the skill. A troll offered to do the work for a price: Esbern's eyes and heart, unless he could guess the troll's name before the last pillar stood. With half a pillar left and Esbern still ignorant, he lay weeping on a hill. There he heard a troll woman rocking her child and saying: be still, tomorrow your father Finn comes with Esbern Snare's eyes and heart for you to play with. When the last pillar was raised, Esbern greeted the troll by name. Finn flew into a rage and vanished. Six hundred years later, on 7 September 1827, the church's great tower collapsed.
