Helwan Hospital
Kairo · Ägypten · Hospital
Children who crept into the old morgue came back out with stories that kept even the adults away after dark.
Ever since it shut down and the doors literally vanished from their frames, the people of Helwan have told of lights flickering in the empty wards and voices heard where no one should be. Children who crept into the ruin came out with stories that made even adults stop walking past after dark, and the neighbourhood keeps clear of the house at night.
The building south of Cairo once served King Farouk's family, but over the years it was turned first into a hospital and then into a morgue — and it is that last function that marks the stories. Today it stands open to the weather, a shell of turn-of-the-century royal architecture in the middle of a living district that would rather leave it alone.
