La Boqueria on the Rambla was built in the 1840s on the site of the Carmelite convent of Sant Josep, burned and demolished after the friars were driven out – the market stalls stand literally on top of the convent's courtyards and graves. The quarter's darkest legend reaches further back: after the pogrom of 1391, when Barcelona's Jewish population was massacred, folk tradition claims the victims' bones ended up as building material in walls nearby.
