In the medieval village of Garganta la Olla in La Vera stands the indigo-blue House of the Dolls, a 16th-century building that by tradition served as a brothel for Emperor Charles V's retinue after the emperor retired to the monastery at Yuste – the blue paint and the carved doll above the door were its discreet signboard. The village is also home to Extremadura's most feared legend: La Serrana de la Vera, a preternaturally strong huntress who lured travellers to her mountain cave, offered them food and love, and killed them afterwards – fashioning household utensils from their bones, the tale says. Tradition links her to Isabel de Carvajal, a real woman of the village, and the legend was already adapted for the stage in the 17th century by Lope de Vega and Vélez de Guevara.
