The castle of San Servando, on the heights above the river Tagus in Toledo, was founded in 1024 as a monastery and rebuilt as a fortress in the 11th century, with Templar knights among its garrison. Its lore includes the tale of the knight Nuño Alvear, who met death in the guise of an old woman while standing watch. Today the castle is a youth hostel, and staff tell of a recurring, sickly old woman's cough from empty rooms. When the TV programme Cuarto Milenio ran an overnight isolation investigation here in April 2022, motion sensors tripped repeatedly during the night, and one participant heard a key card working the lock of her door – though she was alone. Graves uncovered in excavations on the grounds have been woven into the reports of phenomena.
