La Salle School of Turón

Asturien · Spanien · Abandoned site

From the mining valley's abandoned school, where eight brothers were seized and shot in 1934, voices and screams are still said to echo.

The De La Salle Brothers' school in the mining valley of Turón opened in 1917 and operated until 2005, when the building was abandoned. During the Asturian uprising of October 1934, eight brothers and a Passionist priest were seized at the school, held captive and executed by the cemetery – the Martyrs of Turón were canonised by John Paul II in 1999. In the 1950s, schoolchildren also unearthed quantities of human bones when the playground was rebuilt. Since the school closed, neighbours and visitors have reported shadowy figures, green lights and voices and screams from the long corridors, testimony documented by the Asturian research group GAIPO in a 2007 investigation.
