Behind the tiled walls of this Madrid metro station rest the monks of a demolished monastery – and at midnight their laments are said to echo.

When the metro station Progreso, today Tirso de Molina, was dug in 1921, workers struck the skeletons of monks from the Mercedarian monastery that once stood on the square and was demolished in the 1830s. Rather than relocating the remains, the bones were reportedly sealed behind the station's tiled walls, where they lie to this day. Since then, travellers have described wails and whispers on the platform at night, and a chill that keeps the station a few degrees colder than its neighbours. The story has made Tirso de Molina Madrid's most notorious haunted station.
