On 22 May 1938, 795 prisoners carried out one of the largest prison breaks in European history from the fortress on the summit of Mount Ezkaba. Only three reached France. More than 200 were shot dead on the mountainsides as they ran, the organisers were executed in public, and hundreds of the dead lie in mass graves around the mountain. It is on those slopes that walkers and mystery investigators now speak of voices in the fog, and in the damp casemates of footsteps and a heavy presence.

The fortress was built in the 1870s to control Pamplona below, but during the Spanish Civil War it became a notorious prison camp where thousands of republicans were packed together in damp and hunger. The half-abandoned complex is counted today among the most haunted places in Navarre.
