The seal woman's curse still rests on Mikladalur: so many shall drown that the dead can join hands and dance around the whole island.

On the shore below the village of Mikladalur on the island of Kalsoy stands the bronze statue of Kópakonan, the Seal Woman. Legend tells that the seals came ashore one night each year, shed their skins and danced in human form — until a farmer stole a seal woman's skin and forced her to become his wife. When after many years she recovered her skin and fled to the sea, she appeared to the farmer in a dream, begging him to spare her seal mate and pups in the coming hunt. He killed them anyway, and the seal woman uttered her terrible curse: so many men of Mikladalur would perish at sea and fall from the cliffs that the dead could join hands and dance in a ring around all of Kalsoy. The villagers still measure their drowned against the curse's tally.
