In the Marquis de Sade's half-ruined castle in the Luberon, flickering lights and a lingering presence are still reported.

Above the Provençal village of Lacoste brood the ruins of the castle where the Marquis de Sade held court in the 1770s, between scandals and flights from justice. The ruins have long been reputed to be haunted by the marquis's restless spirit: visitors tell of unexplained sounds, strange smells and flickering lights among the walls. The fashion designer Pierre Cardin bought the castle in 2001 and partially restored it. Today it hosts art exhibitions and a summer festival — with the marquis's dark shadow as a constant backdrop.
