Château de Prény

The black knight Milon de Vandières, defender of the castle in 1286, is said to keep watch over the ruins of Prény.

The ruined castle of Prény was one of the mightiest strongholds of the Dukes of Lorraine, towering over the Moselle valley south of Metz. Legend holds that its walls are haunted by Milon de Vandières, 'the black knight', who genuinely defended the fortress against besiegers in 1286 and whose figure has been reported among the towers ever since. Lorraine is famous for its white ladies and revenants – hardly a ruin lacks its ghost – but Prény's armoured guardian is among the oldest. At night, people tell of footsteps and the clatter of arms up on the abandoned castle rock.
