Belphegor is originally a Moabite idol, but in Paris he is the museum's own ghost. The legend says his spirit took up residence in one of the Louvre's mummies and that after closing time he moves through the Egyptian rooms in a long black robe with a mask over his face. Guards have spoken of footsteps in empty galleries and of a shape gliding past the display cases without reflecting in the glass. Arthur Bernède turned the story into a novel in 1927, and when French television broadcast its version in 1965 the phantom became a national affair. The myth has since settled so firmly into Paris that visitors still seek out the mummies in the Egyptian department precisely to see whether anything stirs behind the glass once the room falls quiet.
