Agnès Hellebick threw herself into the well when her lover betrayed her — and turned it into an altar where lovers swore eternal faith.

In the middle of the old Halles quarter, in the triangle between the Grande and Petite Truanderie, a well stood in the 12th century that Parisians called the Puits d'Amour, the Well of Love. The name came from Agnès Hellebick, daughter of a man at the court of Philippe Auguste. Betrayed by her lover, she threw herself into the depths and drowned. Three hundred years later a young man jumped into the same well for the same reason, but fell so luckily that he climbed out unhurt — and the woman who had refused him was so moved that she gave him her hand. After that the well became a kind of altar where lovers came to swear vows in Agnès's name. Louis XIV had it filled in around 1650 to end the gatherings. The well is gone, but the place still carries its reputation.
