The parsonage of the little village of Cideville in Seine-Maritime was the scene of France's most famous poltergeist case in 1850-51. After the parish priest Tinel crossed a local folk healer, a curse was said to have been worked through the shepherd Thorel: the walls began to thunder with knockings and hammer blows reportedly heard kilometres away, furniture moved, and the raps answered music in rhythm. The affair ended in a celebrated defamation trial in 1851, in which the court concluded that the events remained unexplained. The case is still cited in parapsychology literature, and the village keeps quiet about its reputation.
