Kingston's oldest surviving pub stands on Market Place, a stone's throw from the Coronation Stone where seven Anglo-Saxon kings are said to have been crowned. The building dates to the seventeenth century and was originally two separate inns, The Druid and The Hog's Head. During the 1600s the government billeted soldiers in the upstairs rooms, and several of them are said to have killed themselves there. The house's own records also hold a run of deaths among drinkers who drank themselves to death on the premises. Staff and customers have reported footsteps in empty corridors, objects shifting behind the bar and doors closing on their own. Jerome K. Jerome scratched his name into one of the upstairs window panes — on the same floor nobody likes to lock up alone.
