Green Street, Sunbury-on-Thames — the girl they called Monica

London · Vereinigtes Königreich · Spökhus · Grusel 3/5

A Victorian girl locked away by her family and erased from their history now stands at the bedside at night.

In one of the Victorian houses along Green Street in Sunbury-on-Thames, a family in the early 1970s began waking at night to find a small girl standing motionless beside the bed. They named her Monica. When the father dug into the house's history he found an explanation worse than the ghost: a girl born in the nineteenth century with a brain condition, shut away by her family, who died young and was buried in St Mary's churchyard down by the river. Her name was never spoken by her relatives again — she was erased. The present occupants say she is still there and that they do not mind her at all. Sunbury is an ancient settlement with a prehistoric round barrow still visible in the ground, but it is the forgotten girl the village remembers.
