On Enfield Chase, some ten miles north of Westminster, stood a remote half-timbered house called White Webbs. It was built to hide people: trapdoors, concealed passages and priest holes where Catholic priests and Jesuits could vanish when the authorities came. Through the summer and autumn of 1605 Robert Catesby, Thomas Wintour, Francis Tresham and Thomas Bates came here again and again, and on 18 October Guy Fawkes rode out to White Webbs for a meeting on which Catholic peers should be warned away from the explosion set for 5 November. The house was pulled down in 1790 and woodland has grown over the footings; some of the old timber is said to have been built into a nearby inn. What remains is a silent park wood where the country's most notorious conspiracy took its final shape.
