Surami Fortress
Shida Kartli · Georgien · Fortress
Young Zurab is said to have been walled up alive in the fortress — and his mother's tears still seep from the stone.
However often the walls were raised, they crumbled again, until a soothsayer declared the fortress would only stand if a blue-eyed youth, his mother's only son, were entombed alive in its foundations. Young Zurab stepped into the wall of his own free will, and Surami has guarded the Borjomi pass ever since. The moisture weeping from the stone is said to be his mother's tears, and on moonlit nights her mourning figure is claimed to wander the ruins. The tale is one of Georgia's best-loved legends and was filmed by Sergei Parajanov in 1985.
