In 1936 the road between Athens and its port acquired a horror of its own. Evening after evening passers-by reported the same thing: a funeral procession in the moonlight, relatives in black, priests in full vestment, and a coffin carried along the road towards a destination nobody could name. No funeral had been announced and no church recognised the description. Witnesses also spoke of flocks of animals that seemed to move through the air above the street, and of a boar-like creature trailing the cortege. Athenians tied the haunting to a crime never atoned for — the killing of a young athlete named Patoulidis, who died trying to protect two girls. It remains one of the city's most quoted urban legends.
