The Tower of Dreams (Pyrgos ton Oneiron)
Attika · Grekland · Tower
Kyriakos never left his tower. Neighbours still see a shadow in a bowler hat singing on the balcony — and muttering: away from my tower.
On Smolensky Street in Neo Faliro stands a three-storey stone house Athenians call the Tower of Dreams. The cloth merchant Konstantinos Kourtalis had it built, but it is his son Kyriakos who carries the legend. He dreamed of high office that never came; neighbours nicknamed him "Mr Mayor" and "Mr Minister", and he withdrew behind closed shutters until he died in the tower in unclear circumstances. Ever since, people in the district describe a shadow in a bowler hat and monocle that sometimes sings from the balcony and sometimes follows whoever walks past below. Those who have gone inside say they heard him repeat one phrase: away from the tower, it is mine. Every attempt at restoration has quietly collapsed.
