Davelis Cave

Attika · Grekland · Natural site

In the quarry cave on Mount Penteli, shadow figures are said to appear, torches die out and female voices sing from the dark.

The cave beside the ancient marble quarries on Mount Penteli outside Athens was once sacred to the god Pan and later served as a hideout for the 19th-century bandit Davelis. Since the 1970s visitors have reported whispers, a woman's singing, shadowy figures and torches failing without explanation, and rumours of occult rituals deep inside have never gone away. A secretive 1970s military project that left tunnels and concrete gates in the mountainside only fuelled the theories. Today the eerie cave draws geologists, UFO enthusiasts and ghost hunters alike.
