Villa Kazouli

Attika · Grekland · House

In the villa where the SS set up torture chambers, victims' screams are still said to sound through the windows at night.

This stately turn-of-the-century villa on Kifisias Avenue was built around 1902 for the Greek-Egyptian businessman Kazoulis. During the German occupation in the 1940s it was taken over by the SS, who reportedly installed torture chambers in the two basement levels. For decades neighbours have told of screams from the empty building, figures moving past the windows and strange lights at night, and before its restoration there were also rumours of occult gatherings in the ruin. Today the renovated villa houses a state environmental foundation — but in Kifisia the ghost stories live on.
