Here comes a moment of light in the dark. Greyfriars Bobby was a small Skye terrier who by the story guarded his dead master's grave for fourteen years, from 1858 until his own death in 1872. The city took the little dog to its heart, and a statue was raised to him, today the smallest listed building in Edinburgh. People rub his nose for luck, so often that it has been polished bright.
Historians have certainly questioned how much of the tale is true, and a great deal of it rests on a novel from 1912. But Bobby has no ghost and needs none. He is the walk's moment to catch its breath, a reminder of loyalty just before we step through the gates into Greyfriars Kirkyard, where one of the darkest places in the world is waiting. Rub the nose yourself. You are going to need the luck.
