Wah Fu Estate and Waterfall Bay

Hongkongön · Hongkong · Urban site

At the estate above Waterfall Bay, water spirits are said to pull swimmers under — and extra hands to appear in photographs.

Wah Fu Estate was built in the 1960s on the south side of Hong Kong Island, on ground long avoided: by tradition the slopes at Waterfall Bay held an old mass burial ground, and elders warned against housing the living on top of the dead. Generations of children have been forbidden to swim beneath the waterfall, where water spirits are said to drag bathers down to take their place. The estate's most famous chills are the photographs: family snapshots taken by the bay in which an extra, pale hand rests on someone's shoulder. That thousands of residents also watched a vast unidentified object hover over the blocks in the 1970s has only deepened its reputation.
