Crypt of the Immaculate Conception Church, Fót

Pest · Ungern · Church

A woman walks the crypt with a rosary in her hand, praying and weeping. The count himself admitted the house was never empty.

Miklós Ybl's church in Fót has been the burial church of the Károlyi family for more than a century and a half, and it is in the crypt beneath the chancel that the figure appears. Witnesses always describe the same thing: a woman pacing sorrowfully among the coffins with a rosary in her hand, praying and weeping, who vanishes if anyone comes closer. Count László Károlyi said he had never seen her himself but confirmed that villagers had, and Countess Erzsébet spoke of objects rearranged inside a silver casket and of a housekeeper whose hand was struck as she leaned over the money chest. Some say the figure is Klarissza Kornis; others that it is Count István Károlyi's daughter, dead at eighteen in a carriage accident. A photograph from 1956 is said to have caught her behind the count.
