The investigation stalled — and then the capital did something it had never done before: a spiritualist medium was called in. According to the accounts, the dead woman herself spoke through the medium and named a dismissed waiter as the killer. The police laughed, until the trail led exactly there. The man behind the crime broke down, climbed onto Liberty Bridge with a pistol in his hand and shouted his confession out over the Danube. Ever since, residents of the house hear Amália rather than see her: doors that lock themselves and footsteps in the stairwell at the same late hour. Nobody has wanted to stay long in that flat since.
