The meadow was called General's Field until blood renamed it. The shadow of Martinovics's gallows is still said to fall across the grass.

The meadow below Castle Hill was called Generális-rét until a May morning in 1795, when Ignác Martinovics and six fellow conspirators were beheaded here before a silent crowd. Since then the place has been Vérmező — the Field of Blood. The people of Buda stopped crossing it at dusk, and chroniclers wrote that the shadow of Martinovics's gallows still haunts the grass. Others claimed the name came from a bleeding image of the Virgin that the Jesuits had carried in procession on this very spot. Whatever you believe, the stories remain: a stone marking the execution site, a park where dog owners say their animals refuse to walk in one particular direction, and an old Buda rule about never crossing the meadow alone after dark. The city has never changed the name back.
