In the winter of 1788 a black-bristled thing walked upright through the lanes by Christ Church. Dubliners called the beast the Dolocher.

At Cornmarket stood the Black Dog debtors' prison. There in 1788 lay Thomas Olocher, condemned to death for murder, and there he took his own life the night before he was to hang. Soon afterwards women began to be attacked in the lanes around Christ Church by something they described as black-bristled, silent and walking upright. The city named it the Dolocher and held that Olocher's soul had passed into a pig. For a whole winter nobody would walk alone, and in the end the city's pigs were slaughtered in droves to smoke the creature out. The tale ended when a night patrol seized a man in a brawl and stripped from him the skin and head of a black boar: the missing sentry from the Black Dog.
