A black hound with burning red eyes keeps the hillside, and an old woman with a bundle of sticks walks up toward the holy well and never arrives.

The hill between Malahide and Swords is called Feltrim, from the Irish faoldroim, the wolf ridge, and wolves did indeed range here as late as the seventeenth century. On the height stands a holy well linked to the Saxon princess Werburgh. Local lore gives the hill three walkers. The first is a great black hound with burning red eyes that keeps to the shadows and should not be crossed. The second is a grey horse without a rider that trots across the slope and is gone. The third is an old woman, bent under a bundle of faggots, making her slow way up the hill toward the well and never arriving. The hill has been quarried for limestone and partly blasted away, but the well and the tales came through into what is left of it.
