Begunkodor Railway Station
Västbengalen · Indien · Haunted site
After the station master saw a white-clad woman on the tracks and was found dead, the station lay abandoned for 42 years.
Begunkodor in Purulia district is known as India's ghost station. In 1967, railway staff reported a female figure in a white sari walking along the tracks – by legend the victim of a rail accident. Soon afterwards the station master and his wife were found dead in their quarters, and fear grew so intense that trains stopped halting there. The station lay abandoned for 42 years before reopening in 2009, and rationalists who kept vigil there in 2017 found nothing supernatural. Even so, many locals still avoid the platform after dark, and the station is now marketed as a ghost-tourism destination.
