De Monte Colony

Tamil Nadu · Indien · Abandoned site

In this abandoned enclave in the heart of Chennai, the grief of the ill-fated merchant De Monte is said to linger – the houses empty since their residents fled.

De Monte Colony off St Mary's Road in Chennai takes its name from John De Monte, a wealthy Portuguese merchant of the colonial era. His wife descended into mental illness and his only son died young, and the quarter he left behind is said to have inherited his misfortune. Residents told of shadowy figures, night-time noises and the constant sense of being watched, and a couple of decades ago the last families abandoned the houses, which now decay behind overgrown walls. The colony's reputation is so entrenched it has lent its name to a series of horror films.
