Khooni Darwaza – the Bloody Gate – is a 16th-century gateway on Delhi's Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg with a history steeped in violence. Here, on 22 September 1857, British captain William Hodson shot three unarmed Mughal princes at point-blank range before an angry crowd, and earlier still Aurangzeb had his brother Dara Shikoh's head displayed at the gate. The Partition riots of 1947 claimed lives here too. Passers-by tell of whispers, shadows in the archways, and reddish water seeping from the walls during the monsoon – as if the gate never stopped bleeding. The princes' spirits are said to appear in the rain.
