The Hjaltastaður Fiend shrieked insults for days on end in the 1750s – officials documented the invisible voice in their letters.

Hjaltastaður is a church farm in the Út-Hérað district of east Iceland and the scene of the country's most famous poltergeist case. In the winter of 1750 an invisible force known as the Hjaltastaðafjandinn took up residence at the farm: it slammed doors, shrieked dreadfully, challenged people to wrestling matches and hurled abuse at visitors for hours while no speaker could be seen. The magistrate Hans Wium described in letters how he and the priest Grímur listened to the entity talk and answer questions for nearly two days, making the haunting unusually well documented for its time. The case was later printed in Jón Árnason's great folklore collection and is still discussed as Iceland's classic poltergeist.
