After his execution in 1596, serial killer Axlar-Björn was dismembered and buried in three separate places – so that he could not walk again.

Öxl is a farm on the southern side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula where Iceland's only known serial killer, Björn Pétursson – Axlar-Björn – operated in the sixteenth century. He lured travellers to stay the night, murdered them for their horses and belongings and sank the bodies in the pond Íglutjörn; he confessed to nine victims, though legend speaks of eighteen. In 1596 he was brutally executed at Laugarbrekka, and the fear that he would return as a draugr was so great that his body was quartered and the parts buried in three different places – a stone cairn by the road to Hellnar is still pointed out as one of the graves. The country around Öxl and Búðir has carried an ominous reputation ever since, and the tale of Axlar-Björn is still told with a shudder on the peninsula.
