On the Vogastapi ridge along the Reykjanesbraut road appears the Stapi Ghost – a man carrying his head under his arm who slips into passing cars.

Vogastapi is a rocky ridge between Vogar and Njarðvík on the Reykjanes peninsula, crossed by both the old bridle path Stapagata and today's Reykjanesbraut highway. This is the haunt of the Stapadraugur, one of the most notorious ghosts of the region: generations of travellers have described a thinly dressed man on the ridge carrying his head under his arm, and drivers bound for Keflavík have told of a figure suddenly seated in the back seat, only to vanish just as tracelessly. Some say the ghost is Jón Úlfhildarson, others the seaman Kristján Sveinsson, known as 'Stjáni blái'. The hauntings on the Stapi have even been chronicled in book form, and to this day some drivers steal an extra glance in the rear-view mirror along this stretch.
