In northern Cannaregio, facing the desolate lagoon basin of Sacca della Misericordia, stands the annex of Palazzo Contarini dal Zaffo that Venetians have called the Casino degli Spiriti - the house of spirits - since the 16th century. Titian, Giorgione and other artists gathered here for parties and conversation, and here the painter Luzzo fell hopelessly in love with Cecilia, Giorgione's mistress. After a night of drinking he is said to have climbed to the top floor and shot himself, and his lovesick spirit still wanders the rooms.
